On August 2nd, 2020, Guyana experienced its first installed regime. The illegitimacy of the PPP/C administration was laid bare by the national recount which documented the wanton fraud perpetrated on the nation. Be that as it may, the Trump administration forced a government on the Guyanese people and the Jagdeo/Ali administration was birthed.
Subsequently, Hugh Hilton Todd was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on August 5th, 2020. The former member of the GDF Coast Guard was placed in the chair to fill the shoes of the likes of Sir Shridath Ramphal. Upon his arrival, Takuba Lodge was not the same. In a Rohee-like purge, Todd sought to put all the professionals in line and place them under his political thumb.
The first sign which indicated that things are not regular was the unprecedented action by the Ministry to no longer recognize the Polisario Front-Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. In November 2020, Todd sent a letter to Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita to inform them about Guyana’s decision.
The Sahrawi people are considered on the same level as the people of Palestine. They have been fighting for the right to self-determination in Western Sahara since the 1970s. Since the independence period, the right to self-determination has been sacrosanct in Guyana’s foreign policy. Hence, Todd’s decision was a head-scratcher. It was the beginning of the quid pro quo (something for something) between the installed regime and Mike Pompeo. For the first time in its history, Guyana was on the side of the oppressor, Morocco.
This development called for a serious inquisition. This publication uncovered that the reason for the decision was due to the instruction of Mike Pompeo. Pompeo had embarked on a mission to get Arab countries to recognize Israel. He made this request to Morocco. Morocco asked for a favor. They wanted Pompeo to get countries to de-recognize the political organization of the Sahrawi people. The US Secretary of State immediately turned to the regime which he installed, and the deal was done. It was the great elections payback. Pompeo knew that the elections were rigged by the Jagdeo cabal and for this reason, he had them where he wanted them. He kept coming for more.
In the same vein, the Trump administration was on a mission to break the backbone of China. In service of this interest, eyes were set on the promotion of Taiwan. Again, Pompeo demanded another favor from the regime that he allowed to rule the Guyanese people despite clear evidence of fraudulent elections. He secured a deal to establish an office in this country. The Ali Administration knew that this was a direct attack on Guyana’s inviolable ‘One China Policy’ but they had no choice. This was the price of being installed. Todd had no choice. It is widely alleged that instructions came directly from the Vice President to enact this bombshell policy. Again, Pompeo came again for another pound of flesh. This time, he demanded a vote at the United Nations against the Global Call for Concrete Action for the Total Elimination of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance.
Now, Guyana has consistently voted in favor of this resolution but this time, Pompeo wanted another payback. The United States has always objected to the resolution because it endorses the Durban Declaration and Program of Action as well as the outcome of the Durban review conference. They are the view that Israel is unfairly targeted in the aforementioned. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs instructed Guyana Permanent Mission to execute but there was a change of government in the US and when the vote came up, there was a scramble to reverse course.
If Pompeo remained in office, more elections payback was on the cards. Maybe, just maybe, Guyana may have been forced to no longer recognize the Palestinians’ right to self-determination.
