People’s National Congress Reform’s (PNCR) Leader Aubrey C. Norton has officially been elected leader of the Parliamentary Opposition. His election to the position follows his landslide win in the race for Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), where he won 75% of the total votes cast. This marks the crowning achievement of his 49-year political career, which started when he joined the PNC at the age of 15.
Norton’s nomination for Leader of the Opposition was moved by Chairman of the PNCR, MP Shurwayne Holder, seconded by the Leader of the Alliance For Change (AFC), MP Khemraj Ramjattan, and nominations were closed by AFC National Executive, MP Deonarine ‘Ricky’ Ramsaroop.
Norton first entered the National Assembly as part of the 7th Parliament which sat from 1997-2001 and then served again in the 9th parliament from 2006 to 2011. Norton served as Presidential Advisor on Youth Empowerment under the APNU+AFC government from 2015 to 2020.
MP Norton served as General Secretary of the PNC under the leadership of Desmond Hoyte. Norton challenged Granger for Leader of the PNC in 2014 but withdrew his candidacy at the last minute before the vote. Norton, 64, is one year younger than David Granger was when he became leader of the APNU in 2011. A fitting point for the changing of the guard.
