PPP refuses to recognize new Bartica boat body

-To replace with Interim Management Committee

The installed Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) regime is replacing entities it cannot control with Interim Management Committees. Following the recent installation of an IMC to control the Linden Utility Services Cooperatives board, Ministry of Labour’s Chief Co-operatives Development Officer (CDDO) Debbie Persaud has moved on to the next target of the PPP, the Bartica Speedboat Owners Association.

The Association recently held an election in which known PPP supporters, the Belle brothers, Stephen and Clarance, were voted out. Stephen was the President of the Association and Clarence, both Secretary and Treasurer. The election date was set at a meeting between the members of the Association and the representatives of the government.

The election was held in the presence of a representative of the government. However, the PPP government’s Ministry of Labour representative Debbie Persaud told members of the Association that she does not recognize the elected Management Committee. Furthermore, she demanded that the newly elected Management Committee hand over all money collected.

Standing in objection to this demand one member indicated that the Belles have yet to give him a receipt for money he gave to them in the presence of witnesses. It is also alledged that the Belles have refused to hand over the Association’s money to the recently elected Committee, saying that they do not recognize the legitimacy of the Committee. Credible Sources understands that the government’s response was in keeping with a request by the Belles to intervene.

Since the election, the Belles have refused to recognize the new body. The members of the Association are expected to challenge the PPP regime’s decision.
