2 million refugees flee fighting in Ukraine -UN/EU

-Could rise to as much as 5 million

As we approach two weeks of fighting in Ukraine, the United Nations Refugee Agency is reporting that 2 million people have become refugees as they flee their homes in search of safety. The European Union claims that the war can create as much as 5 million refugees if the fighting continues.

Currently the civil war in Syria is the worst refugee crisis on earth with over 6 million refugees fleeing the fighting there. The Russian military is playing a central role in that war also, propping up the Assad government.

Russia has offered to establish evacuation corridors for civilians to flee cities that have been encircled and besieged by Russian forces. However, all those routes would lead to Russia or Russia’s ally Belarus. This is a move that Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has called “completely immoral”.

With besieged cities completely cut off from the rest of Ukraine, civilians may have no other choice but to flee to Russian lines for safety.
