Mervyn Williams, a former Member of Parliament and Advisor to the former Minister of Indigenous Peoples Affairs Sydney Allicock, in a Facebook post on March 3, 2022, blasted Guysuco for dumping millions in sugarcane.
Williams informed that the installed President of Guyana and Guatemala met on March 3, 2022 to discuss cooperation in Agriculture. In particular, they discussed assistance from Guatemala to Guyana regarding the “revitalisation of sugar”. But as that meeting was happening the Uitvlugt Sugar Estate was dumping three hundred (300) punts of sugar cane due to management’s failure to fix mechanical problems at the factory, Williams said.
The former MP is also predicting that soon Guyanese will learn that the GuySuCo’s Uitvlugt Estate will be out of sugar production. “They (PPPC) will tell the nation that, Uitvlugt Estate will be producing ethanol.” The truth, according to Williams, is that GuySuCo will soon be closing the Uitvlugt Estate which is unable to reach production targets and which the corporation is unable to maintain.
Williams is calling on the Government to come clean and tell the nation what exactly it plans to do about the economy of the Essequibo Islands/West Demerara given the new developments within GuySuCo and as it pertains to the future of sugar at Uitvlugt.
