Australian cricket legend Shane Warne died recently, March 4, of an apparent heart attack. The news of Warne’s death at age 52 has rocked the cricket world. Warne, famous for his leg-spin was found unresponsive in his villa in Thailand, a statement from his management company MPC Entertainment revealed. The statement said too, “Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be revived. The family requests privacy at this time and will provide further details in due course.”
The legendary bowler had taken 708 Test wickets for Australia; surpassed only by fellow spinner Muttiah Muralitharan. Warne, who ended his15-year international career in 2007 was recognised as one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Century. He continued to play on the franchise Twenty-20 circuit before retiring from playing altogether in 2013, after which he became known for his insight and forthright opinion as a commentator and pundit.
Shane Keith Warne was born on September 13, 1969 at Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia. The right-handed leg-break bowler, widely considered one of the greatest cricketers in history, started his illustrious career by playing domestic cricket for his home state of Victoria and English domestic cricket for Hampshire. He was captain of Hampshire for three seasons from 2005 to 2007.
Warne played his first Test match in 1992 and took over 1,000 international wickets. Warne was inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013 after being inducted into the Cricket Hall of Fame by Cricket Australia in 2012. While his career was marred by a positive test for a prohibited substance in 2003, he remained an admired legendary sportsman and cricket analyst until his sudden death.
