De Kinderen teen crushed by ‘Cement Mixer’; battling for life at GPHC

Ricardo Nandlall, 18, of Lot 46 South De Kinderen Line-Top, West Coast Demerara and a Labourer at Forrester Lumber and Building Complex at Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, is battling for his life at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) after a co-worker turned on a Cement Mixer unaware that he was inside the machine cleaning it. The worker was alerted that Nandlall was inside the Mixer when he started to scream.

The Police in a statement said that they received  a call from doctors at the Leonora Cottage Hospital yesterday Friday, March 4, 2022 requesting the police presence at the Hospital in relation to a severely injured patient. According to the police, on arrival, the patient was questioned in the Accident and Emergency Department where he was observed to have injuries across his abdomen with his intestines protruding.

Subsequently the ranks proceeded to his worksite and on arrival there they spoke with the proprietor, 47-year-old Andrew Forrester, the police said. Forrester related at about 15:15 hours on the day, Nandlall went into the Cement Mixer to have same cleaned and in the process, a 22-year-old ‘Mixer Operator’ was unaware that Nandlall was inside the said Cement Mixer and he turned on same, causing Nandlall to receive injuries to his abdomen.

As a result, several coworkers went to Nandlall’s assistance and pulled him out of the Mixer. They then placed him in a motor pick-up driven by a coworker and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was treated by a doctor. Nandlall was referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted as a patient in a critical condition.

The 22-year-old co-worker who turned on the Cement Mixer was arrested as part of a police investigation. Ricardo remains a patient in the intensive Care Unit at GPHC.
