Our victory lies in a united Guyana -AWD in Republic Day message

In a riveting presentation to mark Guyana’s 53rd Republic Day Celebration, Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir (AWD) reminded Guyanese that a divided Guyana cannot stand.  She was at the time speaking at the Region 4 flag raising ceremony.

She noted that it is no coincidence that Guyana became a Republic in February since it was in February that the Berbice Slave Rebellion started. The MP urged all Guyanese to appreciate how progressive a move it was in 1970 when Guyana became the first Cooperative Republic in the world.

She went on to echo a charge from former President Forbes Burnham who said, “Guyana’s republican status was not just a matter of constitutional reform, but a very important matter of psychological attitudes and a question of mental and intellectual emancipation.”

AWD notes that Guyana’s promise must cease to be a dream deferred. “My brothers and sisters It’s time that we confront our toxic political climate. It’s time that we confront our current system which neglects the hope and aspirations of the silent majority,” she said.

The APNU+AFC Member of Parliament called for an end to the ‘winner takes all’ politics in Guyana which she said has failed our people. She believes that our victory must not be counted by elections won, but by what we have done for all Guyanese while in office.

AWD believes that Guyana’s ultimate victory will be in realizing a united Guyana; one land of six peoples united and indivisible against any threat to our sovereignty, territorial integrity and committed to putting Guyanese first.
