The United Nations is holding its 11th emergency session of the UN General Assembly over the ongoing Russian Invasion of Ukraine. The session was called by the Security Council of the United Nations, following Russia’s Veto of a UN Security Council resolution demanding the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine. Russia, being a permanent member of the UNSC, has the power to veto any decision of that council, but no country has veto power in the UN General Assembly.
The UN General Assembly met for a special emergency session Monday in order to discuss the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The assembly is expected to vote on a resolution demanding that Russia immediately end its Invasion of Ukraine. It is, however, important to remember that resolutions of the General assembly are non-binding and thus come with no consequences or process for implementation. Only resolutions of the Security Council, where Russia has veto power, are considered binding resolutions.
China, India and the United Arab Emirates(UAE) have all refused to use their seats at the UN Security Council to condemn Russia’s Invasion of Ukraine. All 3 have instead abstained from voting on the resolution condemning the Invasion. Together China and India alone account for 40% of the human population and their silence is very significant. The emergency session is expected to last 3 days and see over 100 speakers. After which there will be a vote on the draft resolution.
