Guyana’s Government and Opposition united in condemning Russian invasion

The Government of Guyana, the People’s National Congress(PNC) and the Alliance for Change(AFC) have all expressed condemnation of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This comes in the form of separate statements by all three major calling for an immediate end to the Russian led invasion.

The Government’s statement said that, “The aggression against Ukraine is a threat to the region and countries everywhere.” While the PNC’s statement noted, “This particular development, Guyana as a small developing state, which has an open economy vulnerable to external shocks, ignores at its peril.”

“The military invasion of this nation state threatens the equilibrium of international peace and security, and will bring economic repercussions which will only aggravate those brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Poorer countries of the world will once again have to bear the brunt of these security and economic distresses.” This was according to the Alliance for Change.

These unifying statements come as Venezuela has voiced its support for the Russian invasion of Ukraine while the South American country continues its push to claim the majority of Guyana’s sovereign territory. Guyana remains resolute that international disputes must be resolved peacefully and acts of aggression must not be tolerated by the global community.
