United States President Joe Biden has called on the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime to promote inclusive growth. President Biden’s call was delivered during his message to Guyanese on the occasion of Guyana’s celebration of our 52nd Republic Anniversary. President Biden said, “The United States remains a committed partner in working together with Guyana to reinforce democratic values, promote inclusive economic growth, strengthen regional security, and successfully meet challenges . . .”
The US president said too, “We look forward to building upon our shared values to collectively address global challenges and achieve a prosperous future for all.” The US president is presently dealing with numerous domestic and foreign matters including an escalating war initiated by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Additionally, President Putin, has recently brought the prospect of nuclear conflict into consideration by ordering that Russia’s nuclear arsenal be placed on high alert — a ready-to-launch mode.
The fact that President Biden took the time to deliver a message to Guyana may be interpreted as a message in and of itself. Political observers have pointed out that the US government is probably not pleased with the way that the PPP regime is governing Guyana, and President Biden views that fact to be sufficiently important to warrant a message to the PPP regime. An analysis of President Biden’s message by one political observer states that the US leader’s choice of words is of great significance.
The analyst, who is often consulted by this publication, has said that President Biden’s call for the “reinforcement of democratic values” clearly implies that the US views Guyana’s current democratic credentials to be weak. Further, the US president’s call for “inclusive economic growth” is simply a diplomatic way of saying that economic development in Guyana does not include all Guyanese. One notes, says the analyst, that numerous Guyanese have expressed the view that the PPP regime governs in a manner that favours only its supporters while, at the same time, neglecting or, worse still, blatantly discriminating against Guyanese who the PPP believes do not support the ruling regime.
