The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) has written to the management of GuySuCo seeking clarity on the intended closure of the Enmore packaging plant and the sale of over 55 acres of cane fields. The announcement, which was made on the sidelines of the recent Energy Conference and Expo by President Ali, will see the Estate facility being converted into a machine shop and pipe yard to service the oil and gas industry.
In a dispatch correspondence, written hours after the President’s announcement; GAWU signaled it wants the company to address the employment status of the 30-odd workers currently employed in the packaging plant. “We have seen, from media reports, that GuySuCo plans to operate the plant through some alternative arrangements. We, at this time, are seeking to learn of these arrangements and what the next steps will envisage,” GAWU stated. The Union is optimistic that a promised meeting with GuySuCo management will happen soon.
During the 2020 Elections campaign the ruling PPPC regime in Opposition promised voters that they would reopen all sugar Estates if it returned to office. A promise that was described by former President David Granger as “fake news.” Certainly, the announced closure of the Enmore Factory must drive disappointment into the hearts of those voters who voted for a lie.
