The General Secretary of A New and United Guyana (ANUG) Kian Jabour was on Friday charged with assaulting his girlfriend. Jabour yesterday appeared before city magistrate Leron Daly for allegedly assaulting the young woman and was released on $20,000 bail. Jabour was part of a special interest group calling themselves “Defenders of Democracy” which helped in the installation of the PPPC back in government.
His party ANUG formed a coalition with the Liberty and Justice Party (LJP), and The New Movement (TNM) just before the March 2,2020 General Elections. Together, they were able to capture one seat in the National Assembly. That seat is presently occupied by Lennox Shuman.
ANUG in a press statement over the weekend said it respects the principle of ‘innocent until proven guilty’. Mr. Jabour has been charged with assault, and will be tried in a court of law, which is the court to be respected, and not the court of social media with its concomitant political trolls and commentators, the party posited.
The party said it has suggested to Mr. Jabour that he should withdraw from all activities relating to ANUG until the conclusion of the proceedings which are pending against him and he has agreed. Jabour, who is no stranger to law enforcement, had a Restraining Order granted against him in 2020. It prevented him from further threatening verbal and physical harassment of his then girlfriend.
