CGID rails against Dharamlall’s “An Evening of Culture” attendance in NY

-Calls for boycott of event

The Guyana Consulate in New York will be hosting “An Evening of Culture” on February 22, 2022, to showcase the uniqueness of Guyana’s six peoples in celebration of the nation’s 52nd Republic Day Anniversary. According to the Caribbean-Guyana Institute for Democracy (CGID), “The PPP government has the gall to send the callous. lawless, sexist, misogynistic, abusive, installed Minister of Local Government Nigel Dharamlall to celebrate Guyana’s Republic anniversary celebration in Queens. Nigel Dharamlall should not be welcomed in the diaspora.”

In his most recent controversy the installed Minister of Local Government and Regional Development stood on the floor of Guyana’s Parliament and brazenly told a female Member of Parliament that she needs a “Dildo”; later offering a tepid apology. CGID asked in a statement, “Will the women in the Guyanese diaspora, and the Queens community, accept this lewd, disrespectful, woman abuser, at what is supposed  to be a national celebration?”

CGID President Rickford Burke in the strongly worded statement said, the entity, “…is eagerly waiting to see which New York or Federal elected or government officials will attend this celebration and stand in support of Nigel Dharamlall, bearing in mind that there are elections in both 2022 and 2023. In light of Nigel Dharamlall’s anticipated presence at this event, CGID calls on all elected and government officials as well as all Guyanese; particularly women, to boycott this event.”
