Installed Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo is facing new accusations of corruption. This time it involves a Chinese businessman who accused the former President of receiving large “bribes” in exchange for contracts.
Isobel Yeung, the New-York based correspondent for Vice-News, got the attention of the Vice President when she told him during the interview that a number of Chinese businessmen have related that the only way to get business done in Guyana is to pay a bribe, and one Chinese businessman singled out the Vice-President himself. An accusation which was strongly denied by the Vice President.
Jagdeo accused the reporter of coming to Guyana to make him look corrupt based on claims by an anonymous person or her fabrication. The reporter then asked the Vice President if he knew Mr. Su. “Su? Oh, Su?… he is a tenant in my place. Yes, yes he is a friend of ours, his father was here from many years ago,” Mr. Jagdeo claimed after initially denying knowing the businessman.
The PNCR Leader Aubrey Norton at his weekly Press Conference today called for a full police investigation into the allegations. “It is law enforcement’s responsibility when allegations of this nature are made they should be investigated. The question about whether the Government will allow the police to investigate the Vice President should not arise because constitutionally, they are the law enforcement agency and they should be allowed to investigate”, Norton stated.
