PPP cuts Region 4 RDC funding in biggest budget ever

With $552 billion budgeted for 2022 and the Natural Resource Fund (NRF) being emptied to provide the funding, the APNU+AFC controlled RDC of Region #4 finds itself starved for resources as the installed PPP looks to cut their budget for 2022. This was pointed out by the APNU+AFC’s Hon. Ganesh Mahipaul, MP, while addressing the Parliament of Guyana in his recent contribution to the Budget debate.

In his address Mahipaul said, “The most populated region in this country, with almost half of the country’s population, was allocated a decrease of their budget from $21 million in 2021 to $18 million in 2022. Is this what One Guyana is about? Will punishing the most populous Region and restricting the ability of the elected Council of Region 4 achieve that One Guyana?”

The APNU+AFC has long accused the Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) of discriminating against parts of the country who did not vote for them in recent elections and this latest blatant denial of funding has served as further proof.

This funding cut comes at a time when regional infrastructure and services are strained by the impacts of global warming and continued urbanization of the population. With resources stretched thin and the urban population continuing to grow, the APNU+AFC has called on the PPP to end their discriminatory allocation of resources and act in the best interest of the people of Region 4.
