Members Parliament Annette Ferguson and Christopher Jones were among persons yesterday freed of charges relating to ‘obstructing a peace office and illegal procession’ brought against them in May of last year by the Police.
At the time, they were among a large group of citizens protesting the ruling of Chief Justice Roxanne George in the Elections Petition Case.
The charges stated that on April 26, between Croal and Regent Streets, Georgetown, they along with six others took part in a procession without first obtaining permission from the Guyana Police Force.
However, the two MPs always maintained that the charges against them and the other defendants were “politically directed” and were satisfied that their innocence was vindicated after a trial and not based on the intervention of the Director or Public Prosecutions (DPP).
The proceedings against the MPs and others accused were dismissed yesterday when Magistrate Rhondel Weever who upheld a no-case submissions made by the defence.
