Wednesday, January 26 is Budget Day 2022. On that day, Guyanese will learn how the installed PPP regime plans to spend our money. It is generally known that national budgets prepared by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) do not cater to the majority of Guyanese. Instead, PPP budgets typically, are designed by the party to benefit the bigwigs in the party. PPP budgets usually contain grandiose projects — such as the doomed Amaila Falls Project or the failed Skeldon Sugar Factory.
This laid the groundwork for the siphoning-off of money and the redirecting of Guyana’s resources into the greedy pockets of cronies and PPP sycophants. Those national budgets lay the foundation for the corruption that has characterised the PPP of Bharrat Jagdeo. This fact is saddening, sinful, and sickening, and all Guyanese should pledge to work towards the goal of stopping the wanton theft of our money.
The fact is, budgeting is the process of estimating revenue and expenses during a specific period of time. A national budget is the budget of a country. The purpose of a national budget in countries with deep cultural, religious and economic diversity such as Guyana is generally, to distribute resources fairly and equitably; it is extremely important for governments to allocate resources wisely.
Various factors such as uplifting underprivileged sections of the society, facilitating financial inclusion, mitigating regional disparity, upgrading law-enforcement and defence capabilities, providing proper educational and health facilities, and much more would usually be focused on by most normal, responsible governments around the world. While such goals are expected of any normal, legitimate government, the same cannot be said of the illegitimate, installed PPP.
While Guyanese contemplate Budget Day 2022, while we would wish for a positive experience, most Guyanese have said that they have already resigned themselves to a divisive document that will seek to punish some sections of Guyanese society, while, at the same time, providing the means for “Them Boys” to line their pockets and further fatten their overflowing bank-accounts.
