In a country like Guyana it must be a dizzying day for installed Head of State Irfaan Ali to grapple with the many problems that besets the nation: out of control COVID-19, amid surging crime and a floundering economy characterized in 2022 by sharply rising prices, among the vicissitudes of daily governance.
However this does not prevent Ali from sparing a thought for others near or far like recently re-elected Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley. Ali and Mottley seem to have struck up an especially close relationship since her interventions in Guyana’s General Election in 2020 which has left a bad taste in the mouths of Guyanese.
The Guardian (UK) recently reported that the relationship is so special that, “It is not uncommon for the president of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, to wake up at 5am to cook his famous fish curries and have them delivered by the next flight, as a gesture of care and support for her.”
The publication’s Mandeep Rai was at the time reporting on how “Female leadership is good for the world“. Mia Mottley was recently reelected for a Second Term after a truncated first, precipitated by a snap election which saw her easing to another 30-0 win in the legislature but with a reported whelming performance of electorate.
Less than 50 percent of the voting public is estimated to have turned out to vote. Not a problem a little curry cannot solve if Mottley shares the love.
