‘Speaker has no moral authority to lecture anyone about propriety’ – Norton

Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) Aubrey Norton today in a press conference, hosted by the Party today, stated that the Speaker of the National Assembly Mansoor Nadir is responsible for the protest that occurred in the National Assembly on 29th December 2021.

Mr. Norton said, “It is the PPP/C’s arrogance, disrespect and contempt for our people, including civil society, and the bias, unprofessional and unparliamentary behaviour of the Speaker of the National Assembly” that led to the strong protest against legislation the regime sought to ram through the Assembly without sufficient public consideration.

Norton blistered the Speaker as having “no moral authority to lecture anyone about propriety. He has been and continues to be complicit in making the National Assembly a tool of oppression. He has demonstrated from the inception of the life of this 12th Parliament, that he is biased and incapable of managing the affairs of the National Assembly in a fair and transparent manner. He has undoubtedly taken the Assembly to the “nadir” of its existence and shed it of even the appearance of a democratic institution.”

“From the time of the convening of Parliament, the Speaker has unashamedly sought to muzzle the Parliamentary Opposition and shelter the corrupt and incompetent PPP/C regime from being accountable to the people of Guyana.” Notron stated, “He has without cause denied the Opposition motions on definite matters of urgent public importance such as the COVID-19 Pandemic, the worst flood in the history of Guyana and the destruction of the natural environment, to curtailing the scrutiny of the national budget. The Speaker has clearly demonstrated that he is partisan who is complicit with the PPP/C to hide the truth from the people of Guyana and is a facilitator of the regime’s corrupt and dictatorial activities.”
