Dr. Rohan Somar is convinced that, “With the spike in COVID-19 cases in Guyana today, it is clear that the OMICRON variant has arrived in Guyana.” Dr. Somar is the System Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Saint Clare’s Health System and St. Mary’s Hospital in the US and the founder and CEO of Pinnacle Emergency Physicals & Associates.

Guyana recently registered 2,231 confirmed cases of COVID-19 over a three day period and scores of institutions are confirming COVID-19 positive employees and students. “It will spread throughout the population like a tsunami as it is spreading  in other parts of the world- including the US , Europe, Africa, India, and others. Wouldn’t be surprised to see that almost everyone in the country will get infected.”

Dr. Somar says, “If you are vaccinated and boosted, you will  likely have a mild to moderate disease. If you are not vaccinated, you will  likely  have serious disease, hospitalization and possible death. This massive and acute infection will overwhelm the healthcare system in Guyana.”

He advises the following:

1) Get fully vaccinated and boosted.
2) Wear a medical grade surgical mask, or kN94, or KN95, or a N95 mask if you can get them at all times.
3) Avoid large crowds – both indoors and outdoors.
4) Avoid bars and restaurants.
5) Prepare your immune  system with increased food and hydration.
6) Use Vitamin D, C and Zinc.
7) Practice enhanced hand washing and proper hygiene.
7) Procure supplies for your family for at least 10 days.
