PPP regime begins distribution of additional severance pay to sugar workers

Christmas has come early for sugar workers as the installed PPP regime has begun paying an additional “$250,000 severance pay” to workers who were severed from the sugar industry, and at the time had received their severance packages, as the APNU+AFC Coalition Government begun “right sizing” the industry which had been failing for years under the tenure of the PPPC.

Since being installed into government the PPP has given several tranches of monies to sugar workers, while public servants are yet to receive a promised 7% taxable increase. Additionally, the regime has failed to reopen any of the sugar estates as it had promised.

In October 2021 installed Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo announced that the monies would be paid before the end of January 2022. According to the regime’s Department of Public Information (DPI) recently, however, “Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Hon. Dr. Ashni Singh and Minister of Agriculture, Hon. Zulfikar Mustapha are kicking off the distribution of the $250,000 severance pay to laid-off sugar workers.”
