Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission Claudette Singh was the decisive vote siding with People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) Commissioners to appoint former GECOM Staff Vishnu Persaud as Chief Elections Officer (CEO) over Jamaican Leslie Harrow.
In a strange twist, Chairman Singh appears to have gone outside the criteria for choosing the best among the candidates as the GECOM release on the new CEO’s appointment states Singh relied heavily also on “the endorsement of former GECOM Chairman Dr. Steve Surujbally” in a appointing Persaud.
GECOM Commissioners Vincent Alexander, Charles Corbin, and Desmond Trotman in a press conference after the appointment said they “disassociate” themselves from the decision of Chairman and PPP Commissioners to appoint the CEO, in what they dubbed a “flawed” process.
