PPP postpones constitutionally due Local Government Elections

The installed People’s Progressive / Civic (PPP/C) regime has unilaterally postponed constitutionally due Local Government Elections (LGE).

Installed Minister Nigel Dharamlall, with responsibility of Local Government and Regional Development, has recently written to municipal Councillors on the subject matter.

Dharamlall’s missive stated, “You are hereby informed that due to the Guyana Elections Commission’s (GECOM) lack of readiness, it is impracticable to hold Local Government Elections with the timeframe stipulated by the provisions of the Local Authorities (Elections) Act (Cap. 28.03).

The installed regime during its last 23 years tenure in office held LGE once even though local elections are constitutionally mandated every three years. There has been no official word from GECOM on LGE.
